11 Dead from Gas Leak in Coal Mine near Quetta
Eleven people, including nine miners, died on Monday due to suffocation from a gas leakage in a coal mine near the Union Council Sanjedi area of Quetta.
Balochistan Chief Inspector of Mine Abdul Ghani Baloch informed Dawn.com that among the deceased were one contractor and one mine manager. He added that all the victims were from Swat. However, Abid Yar, spokesperson of the Shangla Coal Mine Workers Rights Association, stated that the deceased hailed from Shangla.
The tragic incident, which occurred due to a gas leakage, led to the coal mine, located 40 kilometers from Quetta, being sealed off.
Baloch said that the bodies will be sent to their native towns after the funeral prayers.
Provincial government spokesperson Shahid Rind expressed regret over the incident and mentioned that an investigation has been ordered. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed sorrow over the tragic event.
