Fire and Capsizing Incident Involving Indian Navy Frigate at Mumbai Dockyard

On Sunday, the Indian Navy frigate INS Brahmaputra caught fire and subsequently capsized at the Mumbai Naval Dockyard, leaving one sailor unaccounted for and causing extensive damage to the vessel.

While undergoing routine maintenance, the INS Brahmaputra caught fire at the Mumbai Naval Dockyard. Despite efforts to control the situation, the ship began listing to port and eventually partially capsized with its mast resting against the quay.

Although the precise reason for the capsizing is yet to be determined, improper management of firefighting water, which can compromise a ship’s stability, is a likely contributing factor.

The Indian Navy confirmed that all personnel, except for one junior sailor, have been accounted for and a search is ongoing. An official inquiry has been initiated to investigate the incident.

Commissioned in 2000, the INS Brahmaputra is a versatile frigate equipped for air defense and surface combat. It is also capable of housing the Indian Navy’s helicopters for antisubmarine missions.

This marks the third major incident at the Mumbai Naval Dockyard in the past decade.
