Oil Leak at Shell’s Singapore Energy and Chemical Park Contained
Shell reported that an oil leak occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time from an onshore pipeline. The leak was halted by approximately 3:00 p.m., although traces of oil were seen in the waterway between Bukom Besar and Kechil islands. The company stated that emergency response teams were immediately activated to address the situation. No injuries were reported, and relevant authorities were promptly notified.
Shell deployed containment booms, anti-pollution vessels, and dispersants to contain and disperse the oil as part of the ongoing cleanup operation. The spill released an estimated 30 to 40 metric tonnes of slop into the sea.
In May, Shell sold its Singapore refinery and petrochemical facilities to a joint venture between Indonesia’s Chandra Asri and trading firm Glencore, with the transaction expected to finalise by the close of 2024.
