API Introduces Updated Fire Protection Standards for Refineries
The American Petroleum Institute (API) has released Addendum 1 to the 10th Edition of API RP 2001, titled Fire Protection in Refineries.
This recent addendum enhances current fire safety standards by incorporating additional protocols focused on pre-incident planning and emergency response within refinery settings.
API Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services, Anchal Liddar, commented, “The latest revision of API RP 2001 represents a major advancement in fire protection practices for refineries. By adding pre-planning and leak response protocols, we are equipping refinery operators with essential tools to prevent fires and manage incidents effectively.”
Highlights of the Update
API RP 2001 has been the primary industry standard for fire prevention and safety in refineries for over 90 years. The latest addendum builds on this established framework by implementing recommendations from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) and introducing two new sections:
- Annex E: Focuses on preparing for fire response scenarios, implementing proactive measures tailored to potential incident types.
- Annex F: Details a Leak Response Protocol, which offers guidance on managing unignited material leaks to prevent escalation into fire risks.
Additionally, the addendum reinforces the importance of the Incident Command Structure, as established in previous versions. This structured approach enables refinery teams to respond effectively to complex fire emergencies, thereby minimizing the potential for serious consequences.
The publication of Addendum 1 to the 10th Edition of API RP 2001 demonstrates API’s ongoing dedication to safeguarding workers, communities, and the environment, while also supporting the safety and operational reliability of refineries.
