Process Safety Beacon: CCPS Announces the International Process Safety Week
Process Safety communities around the world are working together to present the 1st International Process Safety Week [IPSW] on 2-6 December 2024. Process Safety needs relentless vigilance. The IPSW is intended to promote this vigilance and to remind us of past significant incidents and the lessons learned. IPSW will help unify our thoughts and commitment to continuous improvement to achieve a “World without Process Safety Incidents”.
We urge all readers of the CCPS Process Safety Beacon and others to register for this unique online event. Entry to this event is free, but registration is required. The QR code below will take you to the registration page. This is a great opportunity for all of us to take stock of our past learning and commit to work together for the benefit of process safety. It is a common thread we all inspire to learn and improve. Working together to protect society from consequences of hazardous operations is more important than ever.
Did you know?
- CCPS and other process safety organizations provide a week of learning opportunities during the International Process Safety Week (IPSW) on December 2-6, 2024. link: www.aiche.org/ccps/ipsw
- The intent of this week is to remember the importance of process safety and what happens when process safety is not managed correctly.
- Many companies have experienced significant incidents that have changed their operations and influenced their culture. Maybe your company has one or more of these events. You may have certain policies or procedures intended to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
- Process safety events happen in companies of all sizes and in companies that are not considered “chemical producers” such as food and pulp & paper.
- Incident investigations should focus on the systems failures that allowed the occurrence. Each incident has lessons learned that if properly documented and implemented could prevent another incident.
What can I do?
- Ask your supervisor what events from the IPSW your unit will attend. Many of the presentations will be available after the week’s events for viewing.
- Your company may have a serious process safety incident in its past. Ask your supervisor or some of the senior people if they know of them. The lessons from such events
shape the operations and culture of the company.
Discussing these can reinforce why process safety is imperative to daily operations. - An internet search can reveal some of the lessons learned from past incidents. Many of them have a report that is available to review.
- Focus your daily safety messages on the incidents that have occurred in your company or neighboring companies.
Join the International Process Safety Week and learn how to prevent future process safety incidents.
