Malaysia: 14 Crew Members Rescued After Tanker Fire Near Tanjung Piai

On Sunday, January 12, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) announced the successful rescue of 14 crew members from the product tanker Eagle 1, which caught fire approximately four nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Piai.

Johor MMEA’s acting director, Maritime Captain Kama Azri Kamil, confirmed that the rescued individuals were brought to the state MMEA jetty. However, one crew member, an Indonesian national, was swept into Singapore’s waters.

Singaporean authorities later informed that they located the individual, who was found unconscious and transported to a hospital for further treatmen.

The tanker, registered under Mongolia, had a 15-member crew comprising individuals from Myanmar, Indonesia, and Singapore, with ages ranging from 22 to 73 years.

Following a report from KM Satria about the fire, the Johor Bahru Maritime Rescue Sub Centre initiated a search and rescue operation at 9:25 a.m. Three vessels—KM Satria, KM Tambisan, and Kilat 18—were deployed to handle the situation.

The fire has been completely contained, with no signs of oil spillage detected.
