Explosion at Barcelona Port Claims One Life, Injures Three

An explosion occurred at the Port of Barcelona at 10:13 a.m. local time, prompting the activation of the port’s Self-Protection Plan, according to an official statement. The incident took place at a tank owned by Tepsa, an energy storage company, during maintenance work on the Energy Wharf. Tepsa, a company specializing in the storage of chemical products, biofuels, and agricultural goods, has operated at the Port of Barcelona since 1964.

The explosion, contained within the terminal, resulted in one fatality. Another individual sustained severe burn injuries and was transported to Vall d’Hebron hospital. Two additional people received minor injuries, were treated on-site, and later discharged, authorities confirmed.

Barcelona firefighters dispatched 14 teams to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire. Emergency crews conducted a thorough assessment of the affected area using various resources, including drones provided by the port. These efforts were aimed at minimizing risks and ensuring the area was safe for further intervention.
