At Least 17 Dead in Explosion at Indian Pharmaceutical Plant
An explosion at a pharmaceutical facility in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has resulted in the deaths of at least 17 individuals, according to a government representative.
Approximately 40 others were injured in the incident, which occurred on Wednesday 21st of August at Escientia Advanced Sciences’ 40-acre manufacturing site in Anakapalli district. The rescue operation concluded on Thursday.
The explosion triggered a fire at the factory, which began operations in 2019, as reported by District Collector Vijaya Krishnan. The plant, employing around 380 workers across two shifts, saw many escape unharmed due to the timing of the explosion, which happened during their lunch break.
The facility is known for producing intermediate chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients, as per local media sources.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a vapor leak led to a chemical reaction, causing the explosion, according to Secretary Yuvaraj. The state government has initiated an inquiry to determine the cause of the incident, with officials reviewing security footage and interviewing the injured to assess if human error played a role.
An officer from the Atchutapuram police station described the injuries as severe chemical burns, with victims suffering extensive damage to their skin.
Located in Atchutapuram village, the plant is part of a special economic zone established in 2009, which hosts over 200 companies.
Six fire engines and the National Disaster Response Force were deployed to assist in the rescue operations.
