Fire on Petrobras Offshore Platform Injures 14 Workers

A fire broke out on Petrobras’ inactive offshore Platform PCH-1 (Cherne 1), located in the Campos Basin about 130 kilometers off the coast of Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, injuring at least 14 workers.

Among the injured was a worker who fell into the sea during the incident. He was rescued, taken to a hospital on land, and is reported to be conscious and in stable condition. Petrobras later confirmed that 13 additional workers, all contracted to provide services to the company, were also injured and are receiving medical treatment in the region.

Although the platform has not been operational since 2020, there were 176 workers onboard at the time. The fire led to an interruption in gas flow and a breakdown in communications, prompting the activation of emergency protocols, including the deployment of rescue vessels.

Sergio Borges Cordeiro, general coordinator of the Northern Fluminense Oil Workers’ Union (Sindipetro-NF), criticized the situation, calling for urgent measures and stating the union is actively following the case.

In response to the incident, Petrobras stated that all other personnel aboard the platform are unharmed. The company announced the formation of a special commission to investigate the cause of the fire.
