Five Killed, Four Injured in Explosion at Spanish Coal Mine
A tragic explosion at the Cerredo mine in Degaña, located about 450 kilometers (280 miles) northwest of Madrid, claimed the lives of five people and seriously injured four others on Monday, according to local officials. Two additional workers at the site were unharmed.
Initially, authorities feared that two individuals were missing, but later confirmed that all personnel had been accounted for. The injured were transported to hospitals in nearby cities, with two requiring airlift due to severe burns and a head injury.
While the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, emergency responders reported that it was linked to a machinery malfunction. Local media sources suggest that the explosion resulted from an issue with one of the machines.
Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery in a message posted on X. In response to the disaster, Adrián Barbón, the president of Asturias’ regional government, declared a two-day mourning period to honor the victims.
