Greek Firefighters Contain Fire at Major Oil Refinery, Three Workers Injured

A fire broke out on Tuesday at a significant oil refinery located west of Athens, leading to minor injuries for three workers and prompting authorities to issue an evacuation alert for nearby residents.

The incident occurred near Agii Theodori, a coastal town approximately 70 kilometers (40 miles) from Athens. Authorities reported that the fire was brought under control after an extensive firefighting effort.

Footage broadcast by the state-run ERT network showed thick black smoke rising from the refinery, owned by the Motor Oil energy company. Push notifications were sent to residents in the area, urging them to evacuate as a precautionary measure.

According to a statement from Motor Oil, the three injured workers sustained minor injuries to their arms and hands and were receiving medical care at a hospital.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The blaze briefly disrupted train services connecting the Greek capital to the southern Peloponnese region.
