Over-Pressurized Railcar Triggers Explosion at Theodore Chemical Plant

An explosion occurred at the Evonik chemical plant in Theodore on Saturday due to an over-pressurized railcar.

Emergency responders, including Mobile County Fire and Mobile Fire-Rescue teams, along with other agencies, quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported.

According to the company, the incident happened when a railcar carrying hydrogen peroxide became over-pressurized and exploded.

“First responders from the onsite fire team, Mobile County Fire, Theodore and Fowl River Volunteer Fire Departments arrived on the scene very quickly, and we appreciate their work in containing the situation,” Evonik stated in a press release. “We are fully cooperating with local authorities. Evonik cares deeply about safety and investigating the cause of this incident is a top priority.”

Evonik is a global producer of chemicals used in a wide range of products, including additives, adhesives, batteries, paints, foods, cleansers, beauty products, plastics, and textiles.
